Anatomic Bomb! does Marilyn

A lifetime fan of Marilyn Monroe, Anatomic Bomb! designer Madeline Warren has produced a latex collection to mark the 50th anniversary of Marilyn’s death this August. Here she reveals her inspirations for the ten-piece collection. Photography: Tony Nylons

I have been a lifetime fan of Marilyn Monroe, so, as we approach the fiftieth anniversary of her death this August, to be able to make this tribute to her has been a dream come true.

It is amazing to think that Marilyn is as much a part of our culture today as she was at the height of her career in the 1950s. Her image hasn’t dated and she is still an inspiration to many.

It can be surprising to discover that, despite being famous for her breasts, Marilyn never showed off her cleavage. In fact it wouldn’t have been considered attractive.

Marilyn’s most famous costume designer, Travilla, used to say that the actress had “the best breasts in Hollywood” — not, as you might think, thanks to their size or pertness, but for the fact that they were naturally quite far apart.

This allowed him to create dresses for her that were slashed to the waist without resort to the trick of using tape to keep them apart. So, going against our usual cleavage enhancing rules, we went along with this in our MM designs.

Marilyn wore lots of beautiful clothes in her movies so it was difficult to choose which ones we would like to replicate. After watching her films over and over (oh boy, if only all work was as fun as that!), we finally whittled the choices down to the current ten costumes.

The choice of costumes was made by deciding which items would translate well into rubber. This meant we weren’t able to choose some of our favourites like the Little Rock dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes because one of the major design features of it is the red sparkly material.

If this were made in latex it would just be a vamp-style dress, much like the Yes, Mistress dress we already have. It would be very lovely but not unique enough to be in a Marilyn collection.

In the panel on the right, you can discover which Marilyn Monroe movies and movie scenes inspired each of the ten outfits in the collection.

It may surprise you that, though famous for her breasts, Marilyn never showed off her cleavage. It wouldn’t have been considered attractive

Madeline’s Marilyn Monroe
Movie Inspirations

Anatomic Bomb! designer Madeline Warren relates the ten outfits in her Marilyn Monroe Collection to the movies that inspired them…

The Seven Year Itch Dress
(Gallery pic 1)
This is probably the most famous dress in the world in one of the most famous movie scenes. The latex colour of creamy white is closer to the colour of the original, which was called Bone.

Blue Dress with Bows (pic 2)
A dress from There’s No Business Like Show Business in the scene where Marilyn manipulates the male lead into letting her perform her Heatwave song. Not a well- known dress but we thought it was lovely and would translate really well to rubber.

Bus Stop Showgirl Costume
(main picture, above left)
Worn by Marilyn’s character Cheri, when she sings (intentionally badly) That Old Black Magic.

Misfits Cherry Dress (pic 3)
Worn by Roslyn for a day at the rodeo. Each cherry, cherry stalk and reflection on the cherry is cut out by hand and appliqued on!

Green Top, Violet Cummerband and Black Norma Jeans (pic 4)
As worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Lorelei Lee, when she’s caught with Piggy as he demonstrates how a python can squeeze a goat to death.

Hat-Check Girl Uniform (pic 5)
A lovely uniform worn by Vicky Lester in There’s No Business Like Show Business, while she works as a hat-check girl on her way to becoming a star.

Pink Niagara Dress (pic 6)
A lovely dress in fuschia pink as worn by Rose Loomis, when she sings Kiss in order to torment her husband.

1950s Orange Bathing Suit (pic 7)
As worn by Pola Debevoise in a fashion show scene in How to Marry a Millionaire. She looks an absolute goddess in this scene — it’s Marilyn at her finest. Our suit has a cleavage separator wire with Swarovski crystals. There is also brooch-style crystal design on the hem of the suit.

Pink Diamonds Dress (pic 8)
Another very famous dress, worn for the Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend dance scene from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Tiger Dress (pic 9)
As worn by ‘The Girl‘ in a dream scene in The Seven Year Itch. This dress is made from gold latex with black tiger appliqued stripes.
